Demands
Representatives from the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone released a list of demands on June 9, 2020. The demands fell under four categories: economics; education; the justice system, and health and human services. Authors of the document acknowledged that the zone was on land that was taken from the Duwamish people, writing, "although we have liberated Free Capitol Hill in the name of the people of Seattle, we must not forget that we stand on land already once stolen from the Duwamish People, the first people of Seattle, and whose brother, John T. Williams of the Nuu-chah-nulth tribe up north was murdered by the Seattle Police Department 10 years ago."

The demands include the abolition of the Seattle Police Department and for-profit prisons, an inquiry into present and historical cases of police brutality in Seattle, amnesty for protestors, a specialised 911 mental health system trained in de-escalating mental health crises, the right to vote for prisoners, the de-gentrification of the city of Seattle, electoral reform, educational reform, and the removal of monuments for the Confederate States of America.

Culture and amenities
Tents were pitched next to the former precinct in order to hold the space. The No Cop Co-op was established on June 9, offering free water, hand sanitizer, snacks donated by the community, and kebabs. The intersection of 12th and Pine was converted to a square for teach-ins, where a microphone was used to encourage people who were there "to fuck shit up" to go home. An outdoor cinema with a sound system and projector was set up and used to screen open-air movies. The first film shown was 13th, Ava DuVernay's documentary about race and mass incarceration. Portable toilets were provided by the Seattle Department of Transportation.

Burlingk: Added a link for Purslane, which also meant adding the P section.

This page is currently a stub (So, help add to it!)

This section will be devoted to edible plants. It kind of goes along with the Agriculture page, but a lot of people kind of mentally distinguish between what they think of as "normal" food, and a "novelty".

Knowing about the "novelties" though can be a real life saver at times.

Talk:Building a Village

Burlingk: /* The Basics */

So, lets kick this off!

Getting Started
Firstly, finding a chunk of land -- I've got some ideas myself.

Then there comes the basics:
:-[Water]
:-Food
:-Shelter
:-Electricity
--John (talk) 15:51, 5 May 2014 (UTC)

The Basics
Electricity is a lot less complicated than it used to be. There are so many options now and the tech gets better every month.

The rest will vary greatly depending on where we are at.

Once we figure out energy storage (a must with most sources of electricity), we can potentially create a system that can do double duty. I see no reason why a steam powered turbine couldn't be run off of solar energy during the day, and then its steam output be redirected to a condensation unit of some sort for desalination/purification of water. I am sure someone in the group may have a better idea of the engineering side of this.

If we have good soil, and a stable source of water (and hopefully electricity), then at least part of the food situation will be in hand. Food and water is likely where multiple communities will have to work together.

Shelter will need to be approached in a manner that is efficient, but careful not to spoil the land. Especially if we intend to farm it and/or take water from it. Burlingk (talk) 19:52, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

::: Thanks to the new tech that Tesla is working on, energy is now even less complicated than it was when I first posted this. :P Burlingk (talk) 02:04, 10 May 2015 (UTC)

The Open Community Foundation is a group of people who have their work cut out for them.

We are an eclectic group from all over the world, every walk of life, and even varied political ideologies, that all agree on a few simple principles.

# We want to make the world a better place.
# Freedom and Liberty are needs for all people, not just those who can afford them.
# We want to change the world, or at least some small part of it.
# Transparency is valuable, and we will document everything along the way.

As we gather, and communicate, and discuss, we will further define who we are, and what our guiding principles will be.

A mesh network is a network topology in which each node (called a mesh node) relays data for the network. All nodes cooperate in the distribution of data in the network. (Wikipedia Article)

Mesh networks can be connected in various ways, but are quite often connected using WiFi. They are a form of topology that attempts to be self correcting in the event that one or more nodes are down.

The goal for the Mesh Netwoking project is to learn about, and potentially develope and/or deploy, mesh networks. Mesh networking has great potential in any situation where standard network conenctivity is either inconvenient or just not available. Mixed with various anonymizing technology, it can potentially be used to support secured communications as well.

It may very well be among the technology needed to create a kind of backup internet if the need arises.

Magnolia
The Magnolia is a tree that is common throughout much of the United States. They are propagated as a decorative plant, and most people do not see them as edible.

Edible Parts
Blossom/Flower
The petals of the magnolia blossom can be pickled in a sweat/sour pickle recipe. A petal can then be minced or chopped and used to season various dishes. Use sparingly as the flavor is very strong. They are usually not eaten raw.

Leaf
The leaves of the magnolia tree can be used as a bay leaf to flavor soups and similar dishes.

Propagation
Magnolia trees prefer areas that do not have a solid hard freeze during the winter time, but are not overly fond of extreme heat and sunlight either. They do well in some parts of the south, and places like Southern California that have micro-climates.

<--Edible Plants

Dandelion
Dandelions are seen by many people as a weed. They see it as a pretty weed, but still a weed. The truth is that the entire plant is edible, from the roots to the flower itself.

Edible Parts
Leaves/Greens
Dandelion greens can be used in pretty much the same ways as any other greens. They can be eaten raw, boiled, sauteed, whatever.

Some people prefer to blanch them to remove some of the bitterness, but this is not a requirement.

Root
The root can be harvested from late fall to early spring. For medicinal purposes the late fall is better. For food purposes, the early spring is better as the root will be more tender and less bitter. You want to harvest before it starts to blossom.

The roots should be well scrubbed before cutting and using, and drying is suggested for long term storage.

I have heard of people using the roots for tea, and of it being dried and ground as a flour.

Petals/Flower
Propagation
Dandelions are considered weeds, and grow like them. When harvesting, even if you harvest down to the ground, if the root is still intact, it will grow back the next year.

Small community gardens/farms would benefit all in the area.

Inspired from:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jV9CCxdkOng

Just need a set plan for these.

Housing Squares
The idea of having houses laid out in such a way that makes a common area that a number of houses have between them, which can contain a greenhouse/garden.

For example, four houses, at right angles to each other so there's a square in the middle, could give space to grow food for the residents of the houses.

Here we will work on putting together a list of guidelines and rules for our community and the communities that may decide to become a part of it.

This can be thought of as a Code of Conduct, or a set of Community Guidelines, or even as a sort of Constitution for our organization and whatever eventually grows from it.
